Alice Elizabeth Fitzgerald

Alice E. Fitzgerald, 94, formerly of St. Joseph passed away November 12, 2015 at Woodland Terrace in Bridgman.

 A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, November 18, 2015 at First United Methodist Church, 2950 Lakeview Ave., St. Joseph, of which she was a long time member. Friends may visit one hour prior to the service at the church. According to Alice’s wishes burial will take place at a later date in Big Rapids, MI. Arrangements have been entrusted to Starks & Menchinger Chapel and Cremation Services in St. Joseph. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, St. Joseph, MI. Alice was born May 13, 1921 in Big Rapids, MI. She was the third child of William and Pearl (Reed) Fitzgerald. She graduated from Big Rapids High School in 1939 and graduated from Ferris Institute in 1941 with a Temporary Teachers Certificate. She then taught at Pine Grove School in Mecosta County, MI, a one-room school house, for two years. With the advent of World War II, Alice worked at Willow Run Bomber Plant until the fall of 1945 when she entered Central Michigan University. Alice graduated from Central with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education in 1947, then taught in Marysville, MI for two years and Port Huron, MI for six years. Alice received her Master’s Degree in Primary Education from Michigan State University in December of 1966. Her final placement was teaching in St. Joseph, MI at both Washington and Lincoln Schools for 31 years. Alice retired from St. Joseph Public Schools in 1986. She was a proud member of Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority of University Women.

Alice is survived by sisters, Wylna Johnson of St. Joseph and Marilyn Rolston of Big Rapids, MI; brother, Denton (Virginia) Fitzgerald of Royal Oak, MI; nieces and nephews, Coleen (Ron) Birmingham of Bridgman, Barbara (Gary) Bell of Pinckney, MI, Caroline (Robert) Berard of Royal Oak, MI, Denny (Michele) Fitzgerald of Denver, CO, Gary (Phyllis) Rolston of Travers City, MI, and Rodney (Tina) Rolston of Cleveland, TN; and several great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Ruth Frack; brothers-in-law, Gordon Johnson, Herb Frack, and Dale Rolston; and nephew, Ronald Johnson.
