"A Little About Shawn"

My name is Shawn Osburn.  I was born and raised in St Joseph and have lived in St Joseph most of my life (44 years). I spent quite a few years serving our community.  When I was 18 and still in high school (1993) I joined St Joseph Twp Station 1 fire department and was there on and off for three years.  When I turned 21 I joined the police force becoming a Reserve Officer for Niles Twp Police Department for almost 8 years then moving to Coloma City and then Coloma Twp Police Department until getting sick.  I worked at CenturyTel then becoming Alltel then Verizon, 18 1/2 years as a cell site tech/engineer.  Right after my 30th birthday I had open heart surgery to correct a birth defect.  During the surgery something happened to my kidneys and they never recovered along with many other issues including being blind in one eye making it impossible to ever go back into public service, which to this day I miss very much. In 2008 my little brother, Brad Osburn, gave me a kidney.  I had a great life for 9 years until I got an infection in my blood that has been attacking my kidney for almost 2 years.  I have not been able to work since last May 2018 due to the side effects of the failure.  It is truly horrible.  Looking at being on dialysis for the rest of my days as I was turned down for a second transplant by a unnamed hospital here in Michigan until, thankfully I was able to go back to the University Of Michigan.  UofM will do another transplant once a donor is found, I am blood type A+ if anyone would like to be tested to be a donor and give me that amazing gift of life, they can call 1-800-333-9013.  Even with insurance it is very expensive to get a transplant, just the back and forth from St Joseph to Ann Arbor and back gets very costly and insurance does not cover any of that part.  So a very dear friend of mine, a brother to me, and his kids at the Galley Grill are going to have a Spaghetti dinner fundraiser for me.  At the dinner there will be a raffle, silent auction and other games.  All going to help me get the life saving surgery I need.  I have to stick around for many years as I recently became a Grandpa to the most precious baby girl.  I am determined to watch her grow up one way or another.
