Caryl DaDan

Caryl E. DaDan, 81, of St. Joseph, died peacefully on Thursday, June 12 at Lakeland Regional Medical Center after a short illness.

Caryl Ehrmantraut was born on February 13, 1933 in Chicago, Il to John (Jack) and Erma (Warren) Ehrmantraut.  Caryl was valedictorian of the 1951 graduating class of  Providence/St. Mel’s Catholic Schools in Chicago.  After graduation, she worked for ABC Network where she met Gino DaDan. They married in St. Edmond’s Catholic Church in Oak Park, Il in 1953.

While raising six small children, Caryl attended and graduated from Lake Michigan College with degrees in Mathematics and Government. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree, graduating Magna Cum Laude from Western Michigan University in1969.   In 1982 Caryl earned her master’s degree in Computer Science from Andrew’s University.

Caryl established a 35 year career at Lake Michigan Catholic Schools where she taught Government, History and Computer Science. She served as Curriculum Director, Senior Class Advisor, Commencement Director, Coached the LMC Academic Challenge Team, taking them to the National Finals twice.  In 2004 she was honored with the school’s “Laker of the Year” award for her dedication to teaching and student empowerment. Her introduction and support of new technology programs and initiatives inspired the development of the Caryl DaDan Technology Program.

 

She is survived by her children, Mary (Paul) McEvoy of Harrison, New York; Gina DaDan of New York City; Jami (Steve) Harrington of Marquette, Michigan; Lisa DaDan of St. Joseph; Jack (Kate) DaDan of LaGrange,Il and Joe (Gigi) DaDan of Chicago; grandchildren; Stephen (Anya) McLain, Matt McLain, Paul and Carolyn McEvoy, Ella and Louie DaDan, Joey DaDan and one great grandchild, Alessandro McLain.

 

She is preceded in death by her husband, Gino, and her parents, Jack and Erma Ehrmantraut.

 

Friends may visit on Monday, June 16 at 5:00-7:00 pm with a prayer service at 7:00pm at Starks & Menchinger Chapel, 2650 Niles Road in St Joseph. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Tuesday, June 17 at 10:00 am at St. Joseph Catholic Church in St. Joseph with Msgr. Eugene Sears officiating.  Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery.
