Casey’s Brings Something New to an Old Familiar Locale
Liz Ethridge remembered my speaking to her marketing class at LMC where we discussed many topics, including our restaurant reviews in MailMax. Recently, Liz called me saying, “You’ve got to check out what we’re doing at Casey’s New Buffalo! We’ve got new owners, new chef and our food is amazing!” Liz is a manager there now.
So, Doug and I made the 20-minute trip down to New Buffalo to taste and see.
Last year, Phil Marshallsay & Declan Stapleton bought the pub on the main drag of Whittaker Street and began an overhaul.
“We’ve kept the traditional pub feel inside, but brightened things up,” Declan explained. “The brighter paint, large window in the back, and raising of the front exterior awning all help to make it a more cheery atmosphere.”
Phil added, “Plus we’ve finished a new outdoor bar with seating up to 125 in the Back Yard. When it’s warm...it’s THE spot in New Buffalo. Our large local craft beer selection & wine list are also a big draw.”
Phil is originally from London, England, and Declan is from Dublin, Ireland. You’ll see an occasional nod to their old countries on the menu.
We started off with the Asian Chopped Salad with grilled shrimp. The Asian sesame dressing is slightly salty, so when you bite into one of those juicy sweet mandarin oranges, your mouth is singing. Plump grilled shrimp were a perfect add-on; however, chicken or salmon is also available as options on all six of their specialty salads.
“Our chef, Mike Walker, is fantastic and emphasizes freshness and utilizing local ingredients,” Phil noted.
The freshness of ingredients was very evident in the fish tacos. I’m a HUGE fan of fish tacos, and these are my new favorites. The Napa cabbage cilantro slaw was very crunchy and the Pico de Gallo was equally fresh. Nestled into this goodness was grilled salmon that was moist and flaky and perfectly seasoned on the grill. The dish called Mike’s Tacos features three large tacos, and yet they call it an “appetizer!” I’d call it my next meal!
“We like big portions so people can share,” Declan chimed in.
Indeed, we did share and sample a variety of dishes as we learned about their families, their homelands and even another bar in Illinois in which they are partners. “We both grew up vacationing in Southwest Michigan and were excited to revamp one of our favorite spots,” stated Declan.
What pub would be complete without an amazing burger? I almost dropped my camera when Amy Putzke, the General Manager, brought out Casey’s Original burger with bacon and Mac & Cheese added. The cavatappi (Italian for corkscrew) noodles held the three-cheese blend atop the certified prime grade beef patty. OMG!...and “G” stands for GOODNESS.
We were stuffed at this point, but we had one more dish we just had to try. Chef Mike prepared one of the best steaks I’ve had in Southwest Michigan. It was so tender and juicy with just a whisper of seasonings and char, letting the Angus beef flavor do most of the talking.
Doug and I left there feeling shamefully satisfied and really feeling like we had made some new friends. You should try it.
Doug: New New Buffalo favorite.
