Dolores Jean Lyon, 81, passed away on Sunday – August 12

Dolores Jean Lyon, 81, of Stevensville, MI passed away on Sunday – August 12, 2018 at Hanson Hospice Center in Stevensville. Arrangements have been entrusted to Starks & Menchinger Funeral Home – 2650 Niles Rd., St. Joseph, MI.

Dolores was born on December 11, 1936 in Benton Harbor, MI to the late Herman and Erna (Stephan) Lerke. She was a 1955 graduate of St. Joseph High School and a 1957 graduate of Benton Harbor Community College. On June 6, 1959 at Trinity Lutheran Church in St. Joseph she married her high school sweetheart, Walfred Lyon. Dolores worked at People’s State Bank prior to the birth of her children.  She later became a teacher’s aide at Gard School/Blossomland Learning Center. She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Stevensville.

She always put others before herself, especially her family. Her greatest joy was her grandchildren, whom affectionately nicknamed her Grandma Honey. She was a crossword puzzle addict, an avid reader and NASCAR fan.  Dolores was gifted in many areas, including her art, her chef-like quality cooking, her quick witted sense of humor, and the ability to win over the hearts of anyone she met. While she didn’t travel the world extensively, she was proud to say: “I was able to travel around the sun nearly 82 times”.

Dolores is survived by her husband of 59 years – Walfred; her two daughters – Jennifer (David) Ahrens of St. Joseph and Beth (James) Muldoon of Stevensville; her two special grandchildren – Chase Deda of Milwaukee, WI and Blake Ahrens of St. Joseph; and two sisters – Joyce (Rod) Wierenga of Grand Rapids, MI and Jean (Denny) Alspaugh of Spokane, WA.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Friday, August 17, 11:30am at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church – 4333 Cleveland Ave., Stevensville, MI with Pastor Phillip Quardokus officiating. Burial will follow at Hickory Bluff Cemetery in Stevensville. Visitation precedes the service from 10:30-11:30am at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to Christ Lutheran Church or to Hanson Hospice Center. Friends wishing to leave the family a message of condolence may do so at www.starks-menchinger.com
