Mrs. Spletzer was born May 21, 1927 in Poland.  In September 1947 she married Gustav Oelke and in 1951 they immigrated to America, settling in Benton Harbor.  Else worked at VM Corporation in Benton Harbor until she and Gustav purchased the Stephens Motel in Niles.  They operated the motel until their retirement in 1983.  In 1989 her beloved husband went to be with the Lord.  In 1994 she married Arthur Spletzer.  He passed away in 2002.  Else especially enjoyed entertaining. She was very creative when it came to cooking, baking, sewing, knitting and crocheting. Else was a woman of strong faith. She always said, “I’m never alone. God is with me and with my beloved children. This is what I believe.”  Else was deeply loved by her family and will be greatly missed.

Else is survived by her children-Agathe (Dieter) Krueger of Stevensville, Alven (Elena) Oelke of Benton Harbor, Herold (Jane) Oelke of Stevensville; her daughter-in-law Anita Smith of St. Joseph; Arthur’s children and their families; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces & nephews.  In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by her adopted son Richard Smith in 2002, three sisters-Otillie Doberstein, Wanda Mundt & Alwine Mertin Schiefelbein, and her brother Ed Brunsch.
