Fatal Traffic Crash-Semi vs Passenger Vehicle

Date and Time of Incident:  May 9, 2019 @ 1726 hours.

Type of Incident:  Fatal Traffic Crash-Semi vs Passenger Vehicle.

Location of Incident:  St. Joseph Valley Parkway @ 13mm (southbound). (Oronoko Twp).

Agencies Involved:  Berrien Springs-Oronoko Twp. P.D., Berrien Springs-Oronoko Twp. F.D., Berrien County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan State Police, MI Tactical Rescue Team 5th District, Medic 1 Ambulance.

Narrative:  At approximately 1726 hours on Thursday, May 9, 2019, emergency personnel were dispatched to the St. Joseph Valley Parkway @ the 13mm southbound on a report of a personal injury crash.  Initial investigation has determined a Jeep Wrangler, towing a trailer, was southbound when a southbound semi ran into the trailer and Jeep Wrangler.  Both vehicles ran off the roadway after impact.  The Jeep rolled onto its side, slid into several trees, and ejected the front seat passenger.  The semi rolled onto its side and also struck several trees entrapping the driver who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The occupants of the Jeep Wrangler sustained non-life threatening injuries.  The driver was admitted to Lakeland-Spectrum Hospital for observation and the passenger was treated and released.   

Semi Driver:  David John Schultz, 58, Eustis, Florida. (Deceased) Next of kin notified.

Jeep Wrangler:  Ronnie Shepley-Minner, Sr., 55, Mishawaka, IN. (Driver) non- life threatening injuries.

Ronnie Shepley-Minner, Jr., 26, Mishawaka, IN. (Passenger) non-life threatening injuries.

 

This traffic crash remains under investigation by the Berrien Springs-Oronoko Twp. Police Department and the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office Accident Reconstruction Unit.  Further information may be made available after confirming data and evidence is processed and reviewed.
