Friedhelm W. “Fred” Helling, 82, of Stevensville, passed away, Thursday, July 5, 2018 at Lakeland Medical Center in St. Joseph.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, July 10, 2018 at Crystal Springs Church of God, 1465 Pipestone Rd., Benton Harbor with Rev. Bill Bridgman & Rev. Robert Confer officiating.  Burial will follow at Hickory Bluff Cemetery in Stevensville.  Friends may visit with the family from 5:00 until 8:00 P.M. Fred was born December 25, 1935 in Essen, Germany to Friedrich W. & Emilie (Bajorat) Helling.  He immigrated to the United States and entered the US Army, serving for several years.  On November 8, 1963, he married the former Helga Keller in Sarasota, Florida.

Fred learned the cabinet making trade as an apprentice in Germany, a skill which he mastered over the years, and from which he never fully retired.  He enjoyed working on his lathe, coffee with friends and the game of soccer.  He was a long-time soccer referee in the area and a member of the Southwest Michigan Soccer Referee Association.

Fred was also an accomplished violinist, having played for church services and various special occasions spanning over 50 years.  He was a member of the Crystal Springs Church of God and First Church of God in St. Joseph where he always enjoyed playing his violin and being active in his care group.

Fred is survived by his wife Helga; his children – Heidi Helling & Randall Helling, both of Olathe, Kansas; five grandchildren – Dylan, Emily & Dawson Harrington, Robby & Blake Helling; his sister-in-law Elsbeth Helling of Stevensville; nephew & niece – Detlef (Helga) Helling & Esther (Erik) Kant; and several great-nieces & nephews.  He was preceded in death by his father & step-mother Friedrich & Gertrude Helling, his mother Emilie Helling and his brother Guenther Helling.
