Gregory Paul Smith Jr., 20, of St. Joseph, passed away on July 27, 2017

Gregory Paul Smith Jr., 20, of St. Joseph, passed away in London, England, on July 27, 2017.

Gregory was our Buddy. He was the neighbors’ Snoops. He was the fraternity’s Coach. He was Ansley’s Jawa. Gregory was a brilliant, kind, patient soul, with light in his eyes and love in his heart. And he did all that and was all that while battling depression. He was diagnosed this past fall, and he was getting better. He wanted to get better.

Gregory was born on March 5, 1997. He graduated from St. Joseph High School in 2015, where he played baseball and ran cross country. He was studying abroad at the London School of Economics this summer, planned to return to Washington University in St. Louis as a junior in the fall, and could not wait to play golf while studying at the University of St. Andrew’s in Scotland this spring. He loved science, mathematics, literature, philosophy, and the arts. He played the piano. He had plans. He had a future.

He is survived by both of his parents, Gregory “Greg” Paul Smith and Roberta Christine Smith; his sister, Katherine “Katie” Marie Smith; and both of his grandmothers, Katherine “Kathy” Crane and Frances Marie Smith.

He was preceded in death by both of his grandfathers, Robert Kenneth Crane and Orvel Elmo Smith; his aunt Anita Thorpe Crane; and his childhood dog, Biscuit.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Starks & Menchinger Chapel & Cremation Services. Friends may visit with his family at their home on Friday, August 11, 2017, from 5:00-7:00pm.
