Neil Vitale knew something special was happening Sunday afternoon at Kelley’s Bowl. Early in the third game of the Men’s City Tournament team event Vitale started telling onlookers “we have a chance.” He was referring to overtaking Saturday’s leader, Green’s Hardwood Flooring from Coloma Lanes, sitting at 3547.

Teammate Paul Goodman was 71 pins over his 185 average and the remaining team members, Mark Pullins, Keith Carper and Justin Wade all were shooting respectable scores. A second game total of 1127 put the Jackals 1046 away from the title.

Goodman finished with a 194 game, but Wade shot 244 (214 average) and Vitale 232 (205 average). Pullins had 225 and Carper 217 for 1112 total pins and a 3614 team total for the tournament. Pullins had a 693 series following his 802 on Saturday, Vitale 681, Wade 663, Goodman 635 and Carper 617. The team will split the $1500 first prize.

Vitale, who is the day manager at Kelley’s Bowl, said this was the third team championship for him along with one doubles title. He believes it is the first for the other team members.

Finishing third was Hilliard Lyons (3499) from Kelley’s Bowl. Fourth place went to The Sandbar (3496), also from Kelley’s Bowl and fifth was Rod’s Prints & Promotions (3491) from Lakeside Entertainment in South Haven. The team event had 140 bowlers participating. Doubles and Singles will held this weekend at Lakeside Entertainment.

Pullins had the high scratch series of the tournament with 802 and the first 800 posted at Kelley’s Bowl this season. Bill Froberg had a 718 series and Chris Valley 705. Pullins added a 693 series on Sunday along with Dave Matheny on Saturday. Dennis Weatherman had 691. There were four bowlers one frame away from perfect games. Bill Hendrixson, Jerry Knowles and Pullins each had 279 games. Matt Hendrixson had 278.
