James Patrick Murphy, 79, passed away on November 25, 2018

James Patrick Murphy, 79, passed away on November 25, 2018, with family at his side. He was born on April 8, 1939 in Iron Mountain, MI, youngest son to Robert & Lucile (Coffey) Murphy, and little brother to Bob and Grace.

After graduating from St. Joseph High School in 1958, Jim married Patricia Dally and together they raised 4 children in Stevensville, MI. Jim was a carpenter by trade. In 1970, his youngest son, Shawn, sadly passed away at age 5. The Murphys moved to Walled Lake, MI in 1972. Jim loved boating and always lived near the water. Summers were spent pulling water skiers, sailing, and exploring the Great Lakes by boat.

In 1983, an opportunity to escape the cold winters and help build the Epcot Center at Disney World was too good to pass up. Jim & Pat moved to Kissimmee, FL, where he also built homes and churches.

After losing Pat to breast cancer in 1999, he moved to Tennessee to be closer to family. Jim’s passion was restoring old wooden boats to their original beauty. It was not unusual to walk out to his workshop and find a speedboat upside down on sawhorses with its engine hanging from the rafters. When asked how he managed to do that by himself he would just smile.

Jim was disabled following a stroke in 2015, but through determination, ingenuity and Irish stubbornness was able to live independently for a few years at his Tennessee home.

Dennis (son) & Lisa Murphy, Connie (daughter) & Dave Darin, Ashley (granddaughter) & Jessica Murphy, grandsons Scott, Grant, & Brett Darin, Curt (brother-in-law) & Chris Dally, along with Penny Evans helped him achieve this goal. There were many rescue missions, house adaptations, months of physical rehab stays, tears of both despair and laughter.

Neighbors and friends Craig & Linda Rone, Tony & Barb Breece and Shirley Sells were there to check on him, help with the yard & take him shopping. Jim truly and deeply appreciated everyone’s help.

Jim is also survived by Jim Murphy Jr (son) and many Murphy, Zimmerman and Dally nieces and nephews.

Jim loved to read, keep up with politics and had a great sense of humor. He was always willing to help with any project. He embraced Murphy’s Law!

Jim was preceded in death by his wife and the love of his life Pat; son, Patrick Shawn; parents; & siblings.
