John P. Nelson

John P. Nelson, 76, of Coloma, passed away on Saturday, August 15, 2015 at his residence.

Cremation has taken place. A gathering of family and friends will be held on Thursday, 27 August 2015 from 1:00pm to 3:00pm at Emmanuel Life Center, 9650 N. Church St., Bridgman, MI. Memorial donations in John's memory may be made to the Coloma Rod and Gun Club. John was born April 10, 1939 in St. Joseph, Michigan to Richard and Gladys (Brownlow) Nelson. He graduated with honors from the University of Michigan in 1961. Upon graduation he was recruited by Whirlpool Corp and worked at the Benton Harbor corporate location through the late 1960s, after which he acquired ownership of Century 21 American Homes Real Estate where he remained for many years until forming Coastal Nelson Real Estate. John was a big sports fan and U of M supporter, an avid firearms collector and historian from the time he was a teenager, and was a member of the Coloma Rod and Gun Club and the National Rifle Association. He was also a wildlife conservationist and contributed greatly to wildlife habitat and preservation on his farm where he lived for many years.

John is survived by his four children John Nelson of Calgary, Alberta Canada, James (Christine) Nelson of South Bend, IN, Eric (Renee`) Nelson of Stevensville, MI, and Risa Nelson of Oakland Park, FL. He is also survived by his five grandchildren Jamie (Robert) Hall, Dustin (Mara) Miller, Alex (Lindsey) Nelson, Christopher Nelson, and Remington Nelson and four great grandchildren Robbie Hall, Michael Iwan-Miller, and Logan and Chloe Miller. John also leaves behind his coffee pals, two nephews, and one niece.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother Richard Nelson; a son Mike Sullivan; and a niece Cynthia Nelson.
