  Lake Michigan Youth Orchestra Announces Spring Concert

Saint Joseph, Michigan (4/23/2019) - The LMYO Winds, Concert Strings, Encore Strings, and Youth Symphony will perform in the Lake Michigan Youth Orchestra Spring Concert at 4:00PM, Sunday May 12, 2019 at the Howard Performing Arts Center, 4160 E. Campus Circle Dr, Berrien Springs, MI.  Come enjoy soloist Kathy Zhang playing Zigeunerweisen op. 20 (Gypsy Airs) and a cello highlight from the Encore Strings. The groups will be conducted by Mark Hollandsworth, Beth Oeseburg, Rachel Cabanilla-Sinnett, and Burke Lokey.  This is Mark’s first time conducting the LMYO Winds.  Tickets are $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for children and seniors.


The Lake Michigan Youth Orchestra is an educational component of the Southwest Michigan Symphony Orchestra. It has provided an orchestral experience for talented young musicians in southwest Michigan from kindergarten age to college senior for over 40 years. The four ensembles reflect the advancement to more complex music as students progress on their instruments. Membership is by audition. The orchestra performs four public concerts each year, and the program includes scholarships to summer music camps, sectional rehearsals with members of the Southwest Michigan Symphony Orchestra and free tickets to SMSO concerts.

Conductor Bios -


Kathy Zhang bio

Kathy Zhang started her studies on the violin at the age of eight, after four years of piano. Ten years later, Kathy is now concertmaster of the St. Joseph High School Orchestras and has participated in the Lake Michigan Youth Orchestra for eight years. She was the winner of the 2016 South Bend Youth Symphony Orchestra’s concerto competition and had been a selected member of the MSBOA All State Orchestra for the last seven years. Since freshman year in high school, Kathy has been with the pre-college violin program at University of Michigan and will be attending the institution for a dual degree in violin performance and neuroscience this fall.
