The Lake Michigan Youth Orchestra presents Winter Concerts

Sunday, December 16, at 4pm at Lakeshore HS Auditorium

 

Talented young musicians of the Lake Michigan Youth Orchestra present two concerts in December to complete their fall term. The first concert is Sunday, December 9, 2018, at 6pm atSouth Haven High School’s LC Mohr Auditorium, 600 Elkenburg Street, South Haven, MI 49090. This “Run Out” concert features the Youth Symphony with special guest the St. Joseph High School Chamber Orchestra. The concert will present a special sneak preview of the Chamber Orchestra’s upcoming performance at the Michigan Music Conference in Grand Rapids on January 25, 2019.  The Youth Symphony is a full orchestra with wind, brass, string and percussion students representing 12 area schools.

 

The second concert is Sunday, December 16, 2018, at 4pm at Lakeshore High School Auditorium,  5771 Cleveland Avenue, Stevensville, MI. This “Winter Concert” includes performances by the Concert Strings, LMYO’s introductory string group, the Encore Strings, LMYO’s mid-level string group, and the Youth Symphony, LMYO’s most advanced group. Highlights of the concert include “Here Comes Santa Claus”, Eine Kleine Nachtmusik and “Dance of the Knights”from Romeo and Juliet.

The Lake Michigan Youth Orchestra is one of several educational programs of the Southwest Michigan Symphony Orchestra. In its 40th year, the Youth Orchestra provides an orchestral experience for talented young musicians in southwest Michigan from kindergarten age to college senior.

Under the direction of conductorsBurke Lokey, Rachel Cabanilla-Sinnett, Mark Hollandsworth, and Beth Oeseburg, the Youth Orchestra, Encore Strings, LMYO Winds and Concert Strings rehearse on Monday evenings each school year.

The orchestra performs four public concerts each year - A “Run Out” Concert, a Winter Concert, a Spring Concert and the ‘Side by Side’ Concert with the Southwest Michigan Symphony. The LMYO program includes scholarships to summer music camps, sectional rehearsals with members of the Southwest Michigan Symphony Orchestra and free tickets to SMSO concerts. Membership is by audition for all groups.
