Loretta M. Wilkins, age 100, passed away on Sunday, June 3

Loretta M. Wilkins, age 100, entered into eternal rest on Sunday, June 3, 2018, at Upjohn Nursing Home in Kalamazoo. Loretta formerly lived in Buchanan and Berrien Springs, Michigan.

Loretta was born October 19, 1917 in Bay City, Michigan, to Ernest and Mathilda (Strobel) Schmidt. She graduated from Bay City Central High School. On June 21, 1941, she married Rev. Fred G. Wilkins in Bay City. Loretta worked as a stenographer for several years, and later dedicated her skills and talents to homemaking and raising her family. She was very involved in church activities, and was a member of the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League, eventually serving as both secretary and president. She enjoyed cooking, baking, sewing and crafts.

Loretta is survived by her children, Peter (Christine) Wilkins, Pamela (Rev. Bruce) Hanson, Patricia (Kenneth) Wallquist; grandchildren Kenneth (Amy) Wallquist, Lisa (Philip) Plischke, Rebecca (Aaron) Hanson-Spevacek, Jennifer (Michael) Montoya, Andrew (Lindzy) Wilkins, Amy (Steve Ball) Wilkins; great-grandchildren Jarod, Altaira and Cullen Wallquist, Avrey Montoya, Emily and Katie Plishke, Anya and Benjamin Hanson-Spevacek, Adalee Wilkins, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, step-mother Anna (Meyer) Schmidt, brother Lawrence Schmidt and sister Evelyn (Schmidt) McKay.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Sunday, June 24, 2018 at Starks & Menchinger Chapel, 2650 Niles Rd, St. Joseph, with Pastor Larry Brelje officiating. Friends may visit from 1:00 to 2:00 at the funeral home. Burial has taken place at Riverview Cemetery in St. Joseph. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southwest Michigan or the Heritage Community of Kalamazoo Employee Recognition fund.
