Michael Scott Westbrook, age 51, passed away suddenly on Saturday evening, January 19, 2019, while clearing snow around his home.

Michael was born on October 23, 1967 in Kalamazoo, MI; the youngest son of John "Dale" and Suzanne (Cummins) Westbrook.

He was a lifelong resident of both the Kalamazoo and Coloma areas.

On July 27, 2015, Mike was united in marriage to his lifelong partner, Leland "Lee" Smith, who survives.

Mike graduated from Comstock High School in 1985 and held various jobs until finding the job he dedicated his life to. In 1989, he began his career as a school bus driver and then served as the Scheduling Assistant for Kalamazoo Public Schools for 13 years.

Mike left KPS in 2002 when he was hired by the Portage Public Schools Transportation Department as a Supervisor. After a time, he was eventually promoted to the position of Transportation Director. He held this position until his death on January 19th. Mike was very well thought of and respected by PPS Administration, his office staff, bus drivers, and other area school districts that he gladly assisted when called upon.

According to Superintendent, Mark Bielang, "Mike's work went beyond Portage Public Schools." He was a key contributor to the logistics and coordination required to transport students around the county for programs like EFE/EFA, KAMSC and other cooperative programs."

Superintendent Bielang also praised Mike as being an outstanding individual who genuinely cared for his office staff, bus drivers and mechanics, while being dedicated to the more than 5,000 students who ride the busses every day.

He also stated that "Mike's passing will be felt around the District and he will be greatly missed."

When Mike wasn't at work, he and Lee loved spending their free time at the beloved campground on Cloverdale Lake in Delton from late Spring through Fall.

They loved their campground friends and neighbors and their camp site was always the center of activity.

Mike was a devoted husband, son, brother, uncle and friend.

He was the happiest when surrounded by his family and friends. Mike loved his family, babies, coffee, Corona with lime, U of M football games, camping, fishing, feeding the birds and all animals.

His untimely passing has left a void that cannot be filled and our hearts are broken.

He will be missed so much by all who knew and loved him.

In addition to his spouse, Lee, those left to grieve his passing and also to cherish his memory, are his father and step-mother, John "Dale" and Cheryl Westbrook; his dear sister Diane (Andy Purchase) Gills; brothers, Bruce (Julie) Westbrook and Eric (Lisa Cassada) Westbrook; step-brothers, Bruce (Nicole) Cummins and Robert (Gail) Cummins; special nieces and nephews, Jessica Parnaby, Michelle (Jordan) Tyler, Thomas (TJ) Gills, Conner, Cameron and Carson Westbrook, Brook and Katelyn Cummins, Megan & Joshua Cummins, Caroline Wagner, Tyler Parnaby, Avery and Peyton Tyler;

mother-in-law, Rose Marie Prentice; sister-in-law, Pam (David) Denbow; many aunts and uncles, several cousins, very special friends, Wayne and Ida Neitzke; a host of other personal friends, his co-workers and his fur babies.

Mike was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Suzanne; maternal and paternal grandparents, father-in-law, Grant Smith; several aunts and uncles and a special brother-in-law, John Gills.

Per Mike's wishes, cremation has taken place. The family will receive visitors from 1:00-2:00 p.m. at the Duffield & Pastrick Family Funeral Home, 6548 Paw Paw Avenue in Coloma on Saturday, January 26th.
