Norman was born on January 28, 1931 to Herbert and Edna (Wellencamp) Smith in Brooklyn, NY, where he was also raised. He graduated from the U. S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, MD. After serving in the Navy for four years, he studied at Embry Riddle Institute in Miami, FL to be a pilot. On the August 22, 1959, he accepted a job as a corporate pilot for Whirlpool Corporation and he continued with them for 30 years. He had a fine record flying executives to meetings and company functions and often remarked that he could hardly believe he was paid to do the job he loved so much.

While living in St. Joseph he served as a volunteer at Memorial Hospital and a deacon at the First Congregational Church of God. Norman was a loving and devoted husband to his wife Norma, his daughter Diana Simaz and her husband John, as well as his son Dan and his wife Rosemarie. He took great delight in his four granddaughters Katie and Jennifer Simaz, and Erin and Robin Smith.

Norman’s favorite times were spent flying and taking his family on trips around the country. He will be remembered as a good and respected friend. His parents and a sister, Lois Reynolds, preceded him in death.
