SMWBA crowns their champs

One thing was proven at this year’s Southwest Michigan Women’s Bowling Association City Tournament. You don’t have to be among the area’s elite bowlers to capture a crown.

            The doubles/singles portion of the tournament was completed March 4th and 5th at Kelley’s Bowl with Susan Holland and Pamela Head taking honors with a handicap score of 1475. Holland, a 167-average bowler, shot games of 227-175-213 for 615 scratch series. Her partner, a 183-average bowler, had games of 208-215-168 for a 591 series. Their scratch series was 1206, first in that division.

            Second place went to Donna Bender (142 average) and Faye Higgins (143 average) with a 1420 series. Joanne Smith and Sharen Kreitner were third with 1410.

            The Singles Champion was Katie Lange. Lange (137 average) had games of 156-188-211 for a 555 scratch series. Her handicap series was 792, beating out four others by 15 pins.

            Tricia Morris, currently averaging 195 at Kelley’s Bowl, had the first weekend’s high scratch scores. Morris had 635 in doubles and 626 in singles, including a 245 game. Karyn Fricke, currently averaging 205 at Kelley’s, shot 625 in singles with a high game of 243 and 601 in doubles with a 247 game.

            Thirty-one doubles teams and 62 singles banged out six 600-series and 21 200 games. In the team event, there were 27 200-games and, seven 600-series and one 700-series.

            Babes with Balls captured the team event at Lakeshore Lanes the following weekend, shooting 2872 with handicap. Morris, bowling with her second team of the weekend, shot 714 (222-268-224). Fellow teammate, Cassidie Petlick, added a 639 series with games of 196-199-244. Debbie Price and Candy Selent were the other two members.

            Second place was Girls with a Plan, shooting 2814. Team members included Judy Roemer, Holland, Jackie Henry and Head. Head shot 614 with games of 178-235-201.

            High scratch series for the second weekend went to Nikki Brose, shooting 666. Jill Wilkins posted a 653 series, Candi Wilson 646, Morris  632, and Tmesia Daughtry 608.

            Winner of the All-Events Handicap Division was Susan Livingston with a score of 2309. Morris captured the Scratch Division with 1893.

At the state tournament

          Southwest Michigan is making its mark In the Women’s State Tournament. Ami Huff bowled 267 pins over her average and is leading All-Events in Division 2 with 2262. Susan Livingston and Huff are seventh in doubles in Division 2 with 1455. Arica Angelo is first in Division 1 All Events with 2257 and 18th in handicap singles with 716. Angelo and Jennifer Smith are fifth in handicap doubles Division 1 with 1431.

Brose and Wilson are 11th in Division 4 scratch doubles. Brose is 20th in All Events scratch with 1777 adding a 712 series in team. In Division 3 handicap, Angie Benavides is in 19th place All-Events with 2159. Fricke is 13th in singles scratch with 593.

            Don Zimmerman rolled an 809 series in the Mixed-up Moose League at Kelley’s Bowl March 3. His series included a 299 game.

            Brandon Johnson shot a handicap score of 2883 to win Coloma Lanes’ 12-game marathon. Dennis Weatherman captured the scratch title with 2866.
