Summer Sundays at the Box

The idea came on a cold winter day while planning summer programming for the Box Factory for the Arts. Executive Director Kristen Patzer and I were discussing summer hours and the desire to offer patrons an artistic experience on Sundays - and “Summer Sundays at the Box” were born!

The events would all obviously happen on a Sunday and each would highlight a handful of talented local artisan vendors. In addition to supporting these artists by purchasing their handmade products, visitors would be able to learn something new and complete a “Make and Take” project as well. Of course there would need to be food and beverages and the day would end with live music!

We had our plan so it was time to line up the musicians, artists and vendors. I set to work reaching out to my contacts and each of the “Summer Sundays” started to take shape. We have thrown open our doors twice, featuring artists like Miranda Skibbe, David and Jackie Baker and Matthew Kasewurm. Our stage has been home to Emma Hamel, Jack Adams, Twin City String Band and Avian Aura. Forte Coffee has been our beverage specialist and, in July, Scott Gane resurrected his Baja Gringo Taco Truck.

If you’re thinking you have missed all the fun, not to worry because in just a couple of weeks, we will roll out the next event in the series! For our August 18th Summer Sundays at the Boxwe are going BIG! Sankofa brought the house down at their Box Factory debut in February so we have invited them back! The eclectic soul band’s members are passionate about creating and performing good music. The high energy ensemble includes Beth Haire-Lewis, Steve Parker, Audrey Peeples, Tamika Seawood, Erick Fisher and Anthony Alexander.

Before we all start dancing to the live performance at 4:00, four local artisan vendors will be set up to offer their handmade designs beginning at 1:00. You can shop the stylish jewelry and clothing line of Roxanne Shaw’s R.A.R.E. Fashions by Roxy. Greta Krieger of Eclectic Pearl Crafting will be offering her metal stamped jewelry, keychains and more. Greta will also be teaching metal stamping, so you can make your own piece. Dawn Evans of Natural Effect is bringing her natural skin care line including soaps, body butters and lotions, bath bombs and lip balms. Dawn will also teach “Bath Bomb Making 101,” offering you another opportunity for a “Make and Take.” Rounding out our artist lineup is Chandra Williams of Lunch Money Designs with her gorgeous handbags.

We welcome back Forte Coffee with their cold brew cart offering nitro and cold brew coffee and cookies. Wood, Stock and Grill will be on hand providing all the yummy eats. The August 18th Summer Sunday features a cash bar with beer, wine and select cocktails.

Tickets are $8 in advanceor $10 at the door. All proceeds support performers and the Box Factory for the Arts. Visit our websiteand Facebook pagefor information on this and all Box Factory events.

And because we won’t be quite ready to let go of summer yet, we have one more Summer Sunday planned for September 22ndwith Deep Fried Pickle Project Jug Band! It’s a great time to “Get Into the Box!”
