St. Joseph, Michigan---Lake Effect Jazz Band will be bringing its unique blend of traditional big band and contemporary jazz arrangements to the Box Factory for a Saturday night Unwrapped concert you do not want to miss. They will be performing music from the classic sounds of Buddy Rich, Ella Fitzgerald and Natalie Cole, and also showcasing the sounds of more contemporary composers like the Beatles and Radiohead. Lake Effect Jazz Band directed by Steve Reed has become one of the premier big bands in the Midwest. This fun group is committed to preserving the uniquely American art form of big band jazz through their performances. Lake Effect Jazz Band

Now in its 17 th year of bringing its unique blend of traditional big band and contemporary jazz arrangements to the summer venues of Michigan’s beautiful southwest region, the LAKE EFFECT JAZZ BIG BAND has become one of the premier big bands in the Midwest. This season the band will performing music from the classic sounds of Buddy Rich, Ella Fitzgerald and Natalie Cole, and also showcasing the sounds of more contemporary composers like the Beatles and Radiohead. The Lake Effect Jazz Big Band is committed to preserving the uniquely American art form of big band jazz in concert and jazz festival settings across Southwest Michigan. The BOX FACTORY performance on Saturday, June 17 th , will be the first of two appearances there this summer. The band will play two sets with a short intermission starting out with some traditional swing style tunes and some beautiful ballads. Vocalist Becky Selvidge will be featured on a couple of Carlos Jobim latin selections, Desafinado and Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars. Other vocal tunes during the evening will be Natalie Cole’s arrangement of Orange Colored Sky, and Ella Fitzgerald’s Almost Like Being In Love, among others.

 

As the night progresses the band will delve into some creative modern sounds including the English rock group Radiohead’s Everything In It’s Right Place, which gives the band the chance to explore some interesting contrasting styles and effects. As usual several soloists from the band will be featured including Tom Crowner on Flugelhorn, Christopher Keech on Tenor Sax, and Joe Trojan on percussion.

 

The band is led by Steven L. Reed, retired instrumental music teacher for the St. Joseph Public Schools, where he taught jazz ensemble, orchestra, and band for 35 years. Several members of the Lake Effect Jazz Big Band are current or retired music educators and jazz education is a priority for the LEJBB.

 

The musicians in the band’s ranks include on saxophones: Andrea Gentry (Alto Saxophone), Anne Jensen (Alto Saxophone), Tim King (Alto/Tenor Saxophone), Christopher Keech (Tenor Saxophone), Jeff Bopp (Tenor Saxophone), and Rob Funk (Bari Saxophone). Trombonists are Carl Steffens, Cheryl Thomas, Mary Lynn Edwards, Ruth Livengood, and Brad Jensen (Bass Trombone). Trumpets are Steve Bizoe, Kevin Renfro, Eric Lofgren, Tom Crowner, and Steven Reed. The rhythm section is comprised of Kim McCavit (Keyboard), Tom Gillespie (Guitar), Doug Wegscheid (Bass) Joe Trojan and Chuck Hartzell (Percussion). Our vocalist is Rebecca Selvidge, a former member of Western Michigan University’s jazz vocal group Gold Company, and the vocal music teacher for Coloma Public Schools. Tom McDonough runs sound for the band.

 

The band performs between twelve and fifteen concerts each summer including Jazz Festivals, full length concerts at the Box Factory in St. Joseph, and outdoor venues in Southwest Michigan cities and townships. Featured artists that have performed with the Lake Effect Jazz Big Band include vocalists Michelle Bythrow, Paul Mow, Katie Rohrer, Lisa Dabrowski, and Chicago jazz vocalist Tammy McCann. Instrumental soloists have included local trombonist Ed Bagatini, Chicago vibraphonist Jim Cooper, and Ann Arbor alto saxophonist Doug Horn.
