Vehicle Pursuit / Apprehension of two individuals

DATE AND TIME OF INCIDENT: November 13, 2020. 10:29a.m.   
 
TYPE OF INCIDENT: Vehicle Pursuit / Apprehension of two individuals      
 
LOCATION OF INCIDENT: City of Buchanan, Township of Niles, and City of Niles.       
 
AGENCIES INVOLVED: #1: Berrien County Sheriff’s Office  #2: Michigan State Police  #3: Niles City Police Department  #4: Niles City Fire Department  #5: Champaign Illinois Police Department  #5: Chicago Illinois Police Department   
 
ARRESTED PERSONS:  Two male subjects from the State of Illinois. Ages 18 and 19. 
 
NARRATIVE: On 11/13/20 at approximately 10:39hrs, Deputy Angela Baggett of the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office attempted to effect a traffic stop on a vehicle in the City of Buchanan for a violation of the State of Michigan Motor Vehicle Code, however the operator of the vehicle failed to “pull over” for the deputy and a pursuit took place from the City of Buchanan, thru the Township of Niles, and into the City of Niles.  This pursuit did not involve excessive speeds.  Once in the City of Niles, the suspect vehicle crashed into a dirt embankment and the two occupants fled on foot.  
 
Due to the cooperative nature of local, county, and state law enforcement agencies, these two individuals were apprehended and taken into custody. One of the individuals was apprehended shortly after fleeing the vehicle on foot, while the second individual was located and apprehended after a three hour search. 
 
During the course of this investigation, the officers learned that the suspect vehicle was reported stolen out of Champaign Illinois and the officers also learned that the two individuals were possibly involved in a homicide in Chicago, Illinois.  
 
Both of these individuals were lodged at the Berrien County Jail.   
 
The investigation is currently on-going and once the individuals are formally arraigned their names and respective charges will be released. The Berrien County Sheriff’s Office is currently assisting the Chicago Illinois Police Department in the homicide portion of the investigation.
