Allen J. McKay, 78, of Coloma, passed away suddenly, Sunday March 30th at Lakeland Regional Health Center in St. Joseph. He had been battling cancer for more than a year. Born and raised in Chicago he attended the University of Illinois in Chicago and served in the United States Army in Germany. After the death of his father, JG McKay, he assumed the reins of his family business, KIWI Coders Corporation, a printing machinery manufacturing firm based in Wheeling IL. Allen was active in Kiwanis and served as treasurer of Lambs Farm, a Libertyville, IL community serving the mentally disabled. He was also a director of Albany Park Bank of Chicago.
Allen retired to Savannah, Ga 1998 and moved to Coloma, Michigan, nine years ago. He was a member and former Commodore of the Paw Paw Lake Yacht Club. An avid golfer, he belonged to the Point of Woods Country Club in Benton Harbor and Bob O Link Golf Club in Highland Park, IL. Allen enjoyed travelling, gourmet cooking
He is survived by his partner and companion of 31 years Karen Connit (KC) McKay, his sons Brent of Inverness, IL, Bruce of Libertyville, IL and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter Valda and son Brian, his parents Viola and JG McKay.
A celebration of Allens life is planned for later this spring. The family requests that memorial gifts be sent to Lakeland Health Foundation in recognition of the Critical Care Unit at 1234 Napier Ave., St. Joseph Michigan 49085 and Community Hospital Foundation, Watervliet at 400 Medical Park Dr., Watervliet, MI 49098.
