Fatal Car/Pedestrian Accident on Red Bud Trail

Date and Time of Incident: July 20, 2022 @ 2:59pm.

Date and Time of Release:  July 20, 2022 @ 6:00pm.

Type of Incident: Fatal Car/Pedestrian Accident.

Location of Incident:  Red Bud Trail near Glendora Road.

Agencies Involved:  Berrien Springs Oronoko Twp. Police Department, Berrien Springs Oronoko Township Fire Department, Michigan State Police-Niles Post, Berrien County Road Department/SMCAS Ambulance.

 

Details:  At approximately 2:59pm on July 20, 2022 emergency personnel were dispatched to the above location on a report of a car/pedestrian injury accident. Upon arrival, officers found that a Berrien County Road Commission employee had been working on cutting up a fallen tree which was in the roadway across Red Bud Trail.  A southbound vehicle, driven by a 34 year old     Buchanan man, collided with the tree and the Berrien County Road Department employee.  The Road Department employee was found deceased at the scene.  The driver of the vehicle sustained minor injuries and was subsequently arrested for Operating While Intoxicated Causing Death.

The Michigan State Police-Niles Post is performing the accident reconstruction in this incident. 

Status: This incident remains under investigation.  Further information will be made available as the investigation continues and next of kin is notified.   

UPDATE:  July 21, 2022

The Berrien County Road Department employee who is deceased in this incident is identified as William “Mack” Isom, 57, of Baroda, Michigan.

The driver of the vehicle involved is identified as Taylor Johnson, 34, of Buchanan, Michigan.  Taylor Johnson has been charged with Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated Causing Death.
