Dan was born April 22, 1954 in Niles, Michigan; the son of Carley and Belva Daniel. Following graduation from River Valley High School, Dan joined the U.S. Air Force and worked in the firefighting unit. He later graduated from Texas A&M with a Fire Science Degree. Dan dedicated his career to working in fire fighting and EMS service throughout Southwest Michigan and was always prepared to go on that next call when the bell rang. Dan held a fascination with fire fighting and ambulance service throughout his life. He was active in the Lake Township community and could always be found driving the fire truck in the parades or showing the trucks to the children. An unfortunate motorcycle accident in 2008 resulting in severe head trauma ended Dan's day to day career but following a lengthy hospital stay and rehabilitation period he remained involved with the local departments.

Dan is survived by Jayne, his wife of 34 years; two sons, Andrew (Brittney) Daniel of Bridgman and Michael Daniel of Kalamazoo; his daughter Lira "Eddie" Castillo of Benton Harbor; three sisters, Betty (Charles) Simmons of Three Oaks, Janette (Carl) Sikkenga of Kalamazoo and Bonnie Mattison of Alamo; his sister-in-law and brother-in-law Sheryl and Jim Hausmann of Baroda; and his grandson Leo Castillo.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Jane Lamphear.
