The reigning Miss Southwest Michigan, Shelby Lentz, is set to compete for Miss Michigan at Orchard View High School in Muskegon.  Style, service, scholarship, and success are the cornerstone of the Miss America Organization.  She will vie for the title along with 19 other candidates from all over the state. Contestants compete in the areas of interview, talent, red carpet, and onstage question during two nights of preliminary competition.  The points are tallied and the top ten are announced on Saturday, June 18th, when a new Miss Michigan is crowned.  Miss Michigan goes on to compete for the title of Miss America this coming December at the Mohegan Sun Casino & Resort. 

 

Shelby was named Miss Southwest last August. She is a 25-year-old graduate of Western Michigan University with a bachelor’s degree in public relations, also earning a nonprofit certification from University of Texas online. Shelby’s talent selection will be a vocal performance, singing “Never Enough” from the Greatest Showman, in honor of her late sister, Bre. Shelby’s Social Impact Initiative is “Champions for HD: The fight against Huntington’s Disease.” She founded her own nonprofit and has spoken on the state and national level trying to get support for the HD Parity Act. Shelby is also a published author with her recent book titled, “Brave Breanna” about her sisters’ journey with Juvenile Huntington’s Disease. In May, Shelby was named a “2022 Women Who Shape the State” recipient by MLive for her work with Champions for HD.  Shelby resides in the community of Coloma.

Competing for the title of Miss Michigan’s Outstanding Teen is Miss Southwest Michigan’s Outstanding Teen Lauren Vegter from Stevensville, Michigan.  Lauren is a 16-year-old senior at Lakeshore High School.  Her parents are Melissa and Charlie Vegter.  For her talent performance, Lauren will perform “La Esmeralda” en pointe. Lauren’s platform is “Living with Lupus”. With Living with Lupus, Lauren hopes to show people that by #StayingPostive you can accomplish anything! Lauren is involved in competitive dance team, Lancerettes Poms team, Color Guard, and band at school.  Miss Michigan’s Outstanding Teen competition is Friday, June 17th at Orchard View High School in Muskegon. Lauren’s competition consists of a private interview, talent, lifestyle and fitness, and onstage question.

As Miss Southwest Michigan,Shelby will compete for over $10,000 in scholarships through the Miss Michigan Pageant.  The Miss America Organization is one of the nation's leading achievement programs and the world's largest provider of scholarship assistance for young women. Last year, the Miss America Organization and its state and local organizations made available more than $45 million in cash and scholarship assistance. This assistance is not just for the handful of young women who become Miss America, but is available to the over 12,000 young women who compete in the state and local competitions as well.
