Otto Smikle

Otto Fred Smikle, died on February 28, 2014 of natural causes at his Stevensville home. He was born in Bridgman, MI on January 21, 1928 and was the youngest child of Otto and Hulda Smikle.

Otto was a lifelong resident of the southwest Michigan area. He graduated in 1946 from Bridgman High School after being a part of two high school state basketball championships. Between 1950 and 1952, he served in the Armed Forces in Southeast Asia during the Korean Conflict.

On November 22, 1952 Otto married Norma (Radde) who preceded him in death in 1996. Together they raised three children. Otto spent the majority of his working years as a self-employed contractor building homes in the St. Joseph/Stevensville area; there wasn’t anything he couldn’t fix.

 His retirement years included wintering in Arizona with his good friend, Marvella Leto. He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and School in Stevensville and spent his younger years coaching the school’s basketball program.

 He was preceded in death by his father and mother, older brothers Herbert and Richard, and older sisters Ruth and Norma. Otto is survived by his three children, Alan (Pamela), Nancy and Scott; five grandchildren, Emily (Matt), Tyler, Erin, Elizabeth, and Marissa; great-granddaughter Kenley Rose; older brother, Russell; numerous nieces and nephews and his beloved furever companion Paws.

Visitation will be held from 10:30 am until 1:00 pm on Thursday, March 6, 2014 at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 2673 W. John Beers, Stevensville.  A funeral service will follow at 1:00 pm at the Church, followed by burial at Lincoln Township Cemetery in Stevensville.
