LMC Lady Hawks still rolling

Things are starting to look very familiar for Lake Michigan College. With one conference game left in the first half, the Lady Hawks remain tied for first in the Western Conference of the MCCAA following a 65-47 victory over Ancilla College January 27 at home.
The Hawks had a slow start in the first two quarters, committing eight first turnovers, hitting just three of nine from the line and shooting 31 percent from the field, not to mention one of seven three-pointers. Ancilla led Lake Michigan 23-22.
LMC coach Jason Cooper said the halftime discussion was “calm”. “I told them we’re better than this and we have to be more aggressive to the basket.”
His troops listened, coming out on a 22-5 run, burying the Chargers in the third quarter 24-6. The top came off the basket, shots were dropping, free throws mounted and despite only one three-pointer, LMC outscored Ancilla 43-24 in the half and remained undefeated at home, 9-0. The Hawks are 15-4 overall and 7-1 in the conference.
Sophomore Hailey Maas, averaging 19.6 points a game, scored 12 of her game high 19 points in the second half. Kelsee Kinder was next with 15 followed by Jade Mosier’s 10. Out-rebounded 25-19 in the first half, the Hawks finished with 47 to Ancilla’s 37, Shawnee Dame grabbing 11. The second half field goal percentage was back at 46.2 and the team made 18 of 22 free throws.
Lake Michigan faces Kellogg Community College (1-7, 2-16) at home Wednesday before the rematch with Kalamazoo Valley Community College on the road Saturday at 1 PM. The Cougars, ranked ninth nationally in Division II, fell to LMC 89-64 to open conference play January 4 at the Hawk’s Nest. KVCC has won seven straight since then, improving to 15-3 overall and averaging almost 82 points a game in that stretch.
“When we played them here we hit on all cylinders,” explained Cooper He’s a bit concerned about his offense but says “our defense has improved. Expect it to go down to the wire” Cooper believes it has been four years or more since his Red Hawks won at Kalamazoo. The game’s winner will be in the driver’s seat starting the second half of conference play. Muskegon is next with two conference losses and 12-4 overall. The Jayhawks must face both LMC and the Cougars on the road.
LMC men give sixth-ranked Ancilla College scare
The Ancilla (5-2, 16-3) men came into Lake Michigan College expecting an easy win. What they got was a team that wouldn’t give up, the Red Hawks (3-5, 6-13) finally falling 79-75. The Chargers secured the win at the free throw line in the final seconds.
Lake Michigan overcame a first half seven-point deficit, hitting four straight three-pointers for a 33-31 lead before the Chargers hit at the buzzer, tying it heading into halftime. Brian Harris hit three of four LMC three-pointers, Spencer Adams getting the fourth.
Jake Shafer opened the fourth with another LMC three-pointer as the game see-sawed back and forth. Adams dropped two free throws with 16:03 left giving the Hawks a 40-39 lead. The Chargers mounted a 13-4 run over the next four minutes. LMC fought back, taking the lead briefly, 56-55 with 8:55 left.
Another 13-2 Ancilla run took it down to 3:31 and a 68-58 Cougar lead The Red Hawks staged a third rally, pulling within three 78-75 after Bryce Saxton’s bucket. Ancilla finished it off, hitting one of two at the free throw line to end the game.
LMC coach Jeremy Schaffer said his team played well against a good opponent. “We just have to have longer possessions and be more driven. It definitely was one of our best defensive nights.” The Red Hawks out-rebounded Ancilla 44-34 but committed 18 turnovers to the Cougars’ 10. LMC took 73 shots from the field, making 29. Ancilla was limited to 52, making 27.
Jason Walters, coming off the bench, led LMC with 19 points. Saxton finished with 15 followed by Harris at 14 points. Garry Bonds, Ancilla’s 6-foot 9 forward, led all scorers with 20 points.
LMC will face Kellogg Community College (1-7, 4-15) February 1 at home.
