Richard Hartman Obituary
Richard “Dick” Hartman, 87, of Benton Harbor, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 1, 2026 at Hanson Hospice in Stevensville. He was born July 22, 1939 in Bertrand, MI to Walter and Jeannette (White) Hartman. He married Ima Bayle on June 26, 1960.
Dick will be remembered as a remarkable man whose quick wit, unwavering optimism, and genuine kindness left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. Above all else, he was a devoted husband and an extraordinary father, whose legacy of love and devotion will be cherished forever.
Dick began his career with Sears before he and his wife fulfilled a dream by opening Le Verre Boutique in Saint Joseph, which they operated for a successful 13 years. After retirement, Dick found great joy working for Signature Toyota in various roles, where he was deeply appreciated by both the staff and the clients. Known for his remarkable knowledge of local history, Dick delighted in sharing stories of the area with family, friends, and even complete strangers, earning a reputation as everyone's favorite unofficial tour guide.
Dick was an avid sports fan, who passed this passion along to his children, especially a lifelong love of the Chicago Cubs. Late in life he said that his only regret was that he never got to play outfield for the Cubs. Some of his children's fondest memories were made in the backyard, on the ball field, and on the basketball court, where he generously gave his time coaching their Little League and church teams, and was always willing to take the time to play catch, shoot baskets, and play football.
He graduated from Watervliet High School and attended Western Michigan University, where he became a lifelong proud and passionate Broncos fan, enthusiastically cheering on every Broncos team. He shared this passion with his beloved wife, and they traveled the country to attend Bronco football games and play golf. Over the years they played 99 different courses, enjoying many happy days together on the course.
Dick will be missed by his children, Steven (Anna) Hartman, Pamela Hartman, and Michael (Jennifer Lepard) Hartman; and his grandchildren, Elizabeth, Rachel, and Kegan Hartman.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Ima (Bayle) Hartman; and his parents.
