Ronald Watson Schmidt Obituary

Ronald Watson Schmidt, 90, of St. Joseph, Michigan, passed away peacefully at home with his family on February 10, 2026.

Born on February 28, 1935, in Youngstown, Ohio, Ron was the son of Hazel Ruth (Watson) and Clarence Schmidt. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, David Schmidt.

Ron was a devoted husband to Sharon Schmidt, the love of his life. Together they built a life centered on faith, family, and service. He is lovingly remembered by his children, Suzanne (Craig) Holmes of South Bend, Indiana, and Jeffrey (Lisa) Smith of Green Bay, Wisconsin; and by his cherished grandchildren, Jacob (Cassi) Holmes, Rachel (Chase) Moore, Makenna Smith, Katie Smith, and Libby Smith, and special friend, Linda Doetsch.

A graduate of Capital University, Ron earned his Master of Divinity from Trinity Lutheran Seminary at Capital University in Columbus, Ohio. He faithfully served as a Lutheran pastor for many years, ministering at Faith Lutheran and Historic Trinity Lutheran Churches in Detroit, Michigan, and at Peace Lutheran Church in St. Joseph, Michigan. Even in retirement, Pastor Schmidt continued his calling — leading men’s Bible studies, visiting shut-ins, and officiating weddings and funerals. His passion for sharing his faith was evident in every aspect of his life.

Ron had a deep love for reading and a special interest in World War I history, but nothing brought him greater joy than sharing his relationship with Christ, His Savior with others and spending time with his family. His steady faith, thoughtful wisdom, and servant’s heart touched countless lives.

Visitation will be held Friday, February 13, 2026, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Starks & Menchinger Chapel, 2650 Niles Rd., in St. Joseph, Michigan.
