Benton Harbor High School Library Invites Book Lovers to meet 2015 Michigan Notable Author Anna Clark
BentonHarbor High Schoolhas announced that Anna Clark,editor of A Detroit Anthology will visit the school’s library at1:00 pm on Thursday, April 23.
Anna is one of approximately 20 writers who have been selected as 2015 Michigan Notable Authors. The selected authors will be touring the state, visiting nearly 50 Michigan libraries, during the months of April, May, and June. The authors will talk with book lovers and readers about their work and about the writing process. Appearances will include time for book signings and question-and-answer time with those attending the presentations.
The Benton Harbor High School Library is located at the south end of the school. Guests should enter the building through the main entrance at 870 Colfax Avenue in Benton Harbor. Guides will provide directions for those attending the event. For details about this author event, call 269-921-3816.
It’s a wonderful treat to have Anna Clark visitour community and school, sharing her unique work with our students, friends and neighbors. Anna grew up in St. Joseph, graduated from The University of Michigan and from the Warren Wilson College MFA Program for Writers. She was a Fulbright Fellow in Kenya and has also been a fellow with the Peter Jennings Center for Journalists and the Constitution. Her works have appeared in The New York Times, The New Republic, NBC News POLITICO Magazine, Pacific Standard, The Guardian, The American Prospect, The Nation, Grantland, The Christian Science Monitor, and The Boston Review as well as other publications. She is a political media correspondent for the Columbia Journalism Review as part of its United States Project, a contributing editor at Waxwing Literary Journal, and senior editor with Belt Books. In 2012 she founded Literary Detroit. She is a writer-in--residence in Detroit high schools through the Inside Out Literary Arts Project. On Thursday evenings she facilitates a theater workshop at a men’s prison ini Macomb Ciounty Michigan.
The Michigan Notable Books program is designed to promote reading and raise awareness of Michigan’s literary heritage. The program annually selects 20 of the most outstanding books published in that year, titles that are reflective of Michigan's diverse ethnic, historical, literary and cultural experience.
“This year’s Michigan Notable Books delve into wonderfully diverse topics and offer something of interest for just about everyone,” said State Librarian Randy Riley. “The tour offers the opportunity for book enthusiasts in many corners of the state to join in the conversation about what constitutes ‘great writing’ and to hear from some of the Great Lakes region’s most beloved authors. Michigan is home to some of the best stories, told by some of the best writers found anywhere in the country.”
In addition to the tour, the Library of Michigan Foundation will host a “Night for Notables” on Saturday, April 25 with Michigan entrepreneur and author Linda Hundt as the featured speaker. The mission of the Benton Harbor High School Library volunteer team is to provide learning experiences to support and expand the school’s curriculum offerings. Applying to the Michigan Notable Author Program and being able to bring “home” a young and talented local writer who has found her niche as an author and editor will be an inspiration to the public as well as to the students attending the high school.
