Fatal Injury Crash

DATE AND TIME OF INCIDENT: Thursday January 18,2018 @ 0718

TYPE OF INCIDENT:  Fatal Injury Crash                       

LOCATION OF INCIDENT:  Old US 31 Just north of Deans Hill Rd, Berrien Twp          

AGENCIES INVOLVED:  Berrien County Sheriffs Office, Michigan State Police, SMCAS Ambulance, Eau Claire/Berrien Township Fire Dept, Berrien Springs/Oronoko Township Police, Berrien Sheriffs Crash Reconstruction Unit.

NARRATIVE:   At 0718 this morning Berrien County Patrol Deputies responded to a car vs pedestrian crash near the intersection of Old US 31 and Dean Hill Rd in Berrien Twp.  Upon arrival, Deputies found a passerby doing CPR on an unresponsive male subject who had been struck by a motor vehicle.  The subject was transported to Lakeland Hospital in St Joseph where he later died from injuries sustained in the crash. 

     Crash reconstructionist were called to assist in the investigation.  Investigators found that a vehicle, driven by a 60 yr old Niles, MI man travelling northbound on Old US 31 and had just passed Deans Hill Rd when he noticed an object in front of him in the roadway.  He tried to avoid the object but was unable.  It was determined that the subject, 52 yr old Lee Hauweghen from Hartford, MI was walking across the roadway when he was struck.

  Speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash. The accident remains under investigation.
