The Last Five Years will mark the 2nd production of The GhostLight Theatre’s 6th season, and it will be presented in the GhostLight’s Black Box Theatre space from Thursday, April 10th , through Sunday, April 13rd. On Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, curtain is at 7:30 p.m. and on Sunday at 3 p.m. at 101 Hinkley Street in Benton Harbor. The Last Five Years explores a five-year relationship between Jamie Wellerstein, a rising novelist, and Cathy Hiatt,[1] a struggling actress. The show uses a form of storytelling in which Jamie's story is told in chronological order (starting just after the couple have first met) and Cathy's story is told in reverse chronological order (beginning the show at the end of the marriage). The characters do not normally interact except for one song in the middle as their timelines intersect. In this production, both characters are involved throughout as well as adding a few other actors along the way. A new production has also just opened on Broadway, and the production is slated to run a 14 week limited at the Hudson Theatre. Run time is approximately 95 minutes, with no intermission
The cast includes Paige Mulick (Pippin, Cabaret) as Cathy, Wes Shenker (Bright Star, Rocky Horror) as Jamie, as well as Jessie Tovar as Elise, and Karlianne Loshbough and Michelle Miller in the ensemble. Set Design is by John Taylor, Lighting Design by Lee Anne Meeks, Projection Design by Charles Nelson and Sound Design by Marc VanGilder. Set painting was done by John Taylor and Cindy Jakeway, with Costumes, Properties and Stage Management by Einra Baker and Karlianne Loshbough, with Intimacy Coordination by Rachel Thomas. GhostLight’s live orchestra will feature Music Director/Pianist Sachio Nang, Earle Perez, Cello 1, Braden Miesse on Cello 2, Seth Martin on Violin, Ivan Torres on Bass and Ryan Downey on Guitar.
“We are delighted to bring Jason Robert Brown’s fantastic music back to The GhostLight in the form of this incredibly beautiful piece from the musical theatre canon“ says Artistic Director Paul Mow, “Our company opened with Bridges of Madison County in 2019, as well as a visit from Jason himself for our kickoff gala. It lives on as a very important memory and milestone for The GhostLight, just as I’m sure this production will prove to be as well.” The production is recommended for mature audiences (13+) and may contain language that some audience members may find objectionable.
Season Sponsors include Chicago Records Management and On Base Productions, as well as show sponsors Bread+Bar, Lake Michigan Nephrology, Stockholm Objects, Scott Berry Promotions, The Mason Jar Café, Tom and Roni Buckley, Jud Vosburg and Tyler Bauer and Forte Coffee
