LEARN ALL THE PERKS OF BEING A SILVER BEACH CAROUSEL VOLUNTEER AT THE FREE CHILI EVENT ON MARCH 17

The Silver Beach Carousel in St. Joseph knows how lucky they are to have volunteers to help run the happiest place in Southwest Michigan. To thank current volunteers, and encourage new people to join the fun, they are hosting their annual “Warm Up with Chili” event on March 17.

“A good volunteer is like a four-leaf clover, hard to find and lucky to have,” Suz Schalon, president of the Silver Beach Carousel Society, said. “Before our busy summer season arrives, we need to find more volunteers. To entice new people to join our fun team, our Carousel chefs will serve some of the most delicious chilis in Southwest Michigan.”

The event runs from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Silver Beach Center, 333 Broad St. Guests can expect homemade specialty chilis with all their favorite toppings, an assortment of breads, scrumptious desserts, a free Carousel ride and a door prize drawing. The Carousel encourages attendees to wear green to honor the March 17 date and this year’s Feeling Lucky theme.

Schalon said the Carousel is currently recruiting for all volunteer positions. They will share those roles, volunteer expectations and training options at the event. Prospective volunteers will also hear about the various perks, including appreciation events, the Brass Ring Gift Shop discount, free Carousel rides and refreshment stand treats that make volunteering so much fun.

“We are one of the few places you can volunteer that you choose your shifts based on what fits your schedule,” said Schalon. “It’s a happy way to be involved in the community and make memories for thousands of visitors throughout the year. You go home smiling.”

Current volunteers will receive an invitation in their email through Volgistics and should RSVP by March 12. Volunteers are encouraged to invite a family member or friend who is interested in volunteering at the Carousel to join them at the event. Anyone interested in volunteering and participating in the chili night should contact the Carousel at 269-932-1141 and complete a volunteer application online at silverbeachcarousel.com/volunteer before March 12.

“The more volunteers we have, the more days and hours we can open the Carousel,” said Schalon. “Come enjoy some chili — and let’s turn this into a lucky day for all of us.”

ABOUT SILVER BEACH CAROUSEL

Silver Beach Carousel (circa 2010) features 48 beautifully hand-carved and hand-painted, unique figures and two chariots (one is wheelchair accessible). They whirl beneath 1,000 twinkling lights. Around the top of the carousel are 18 rounding boards that tell the area’s rich history with computer-colorized, vintage photographs. Many believe this to be the first carousel in the world to use photographs instead of paintings on its rounding boards.

The Carousel House is home to the Brass Ring Gift Shop. It also has the Silver Beach Amusement Park Museum with interactive displays and memorabilia from the park that closed in 1971. Visitors can enjoy board games, children’s activities, an electric miniature train layout and concessions.

Other attractions within Silver Beach Center are the Shadowland on Silver Beach ballroom and Curious Kids’ Discovery Zone. Visit www.silverbeachcarousel.com or call 269-932-1141 for hours and more information.
