New name in the works for Berrien County Animal Control
New name in the works for Berrien County Animal Control as they begin Rebranding
The Berrien County Animal Control shelter is winding the summer down with a bit of a face lift. The shelter has been in the process of changing their name to embrace the new dynamic that the department operates under.
In April 2022, the Berrien County Animal Control enforcement was moved under the umbrella of the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office with approval from the Board of Commissioners. This was to better equip and support the Animal Control Deputies in their ability to enforce our local animal ordinances and state laws. The shelter remained under the County Administrator, and continues to work closely with their enforcement counterparts.
The important work at the Berrien County Animal Control shelter continues as staff provide more than housing the community dogs. The kennel operations include low cost spay/neuter, vaccinations, licensing, medical care of animals housed at the shelter and animal adoptions. In collaboration with the staff, volunteers and sponsor organizations requested a rebranding to better reflect the work being done. In June 2024, the Board of Commissioners approved the Berrien County Animal Control shelter to be rebranded Berrien County Animal Services.
Berrien County Animal Services hopes to assist the community in becoming more animal savvy and pet paw-sitive. The rebranding of the shelter will begin within the next month and will include a new logo and signage. While the name may be changing, the community-minded staff are continuing some of the previous traditions. On October 26, 2024 they will host a Trunk or Treat at their facility, 1400 S. Euclid Avenue, Benton Harbor, from 9:30 – noon. Businesses or groups are invited to join them in this effort as a candy station, to pass out treats to community members. The deadline for signing up is October 21, 2024 which can be done by calling 269-927-5648 or emailing kfrancis@berriencounty.org.
