Present Pillars Announces Expungement Resource Fair at Lake Michigan College
Present Pillars is excited to host the Expungement Resource Fair, a pivotal event designed to provide vital support and resources for individuals pursuing expungement of Michigan-based convictions. The fair will take place on October 12, 2024, from noon to 4:00 p.m. at the Lake Michigan College Mendel Center, located at 1100 Yore Avenue, Benton Harbor, MI.
Expungement is a critical legal process that allows individuals to have a certain criminal records removed from public view. This process offers a fresh start for those who have faced legal challenges, significantly affecting their ability to secure employment, housing, and other opportunities. By clearing these records, expungement not only restores dignity but also strengthens families and communities by removing barriers that hinder financial stability and personal growth.
"Expungement is more than just a legal procedure - it's a pathway to a brighter future for families and communities," said James Gunter, Executive Director at Present Pillars. "We, along with our partners, are excited to provide the resources and support needed to help individuals move forward with their lives."
"Access to expungement resources has not always been readily available to those in need of such services. This is why events such as this upcoming Expungement Resource Fair are crucial in ensuring that the public takes advantage of the recent changes to Michigan's Clean Slate law." said Safe & Just Michigan's Clean Slate Program Manager, Kamau Sandiford.
This event is made possible through collaboration with esteemed partners, including Legal Aid of Western Michigan, Berrien Community Foundation, Safe & Just Michigan, Lake Michigan College, and the Michigan Department of Attorney General. Together, these organizations are dedicated to fostering a stronger, more inclusive community by helping individuals clear their records and regain control of their lives.
Present Pillars invites residents from Berrien, Cass, and Van Buren Counties, as well as surrounding areas, to participate in this event. Those attending will have the opportunity to take the first step toward a new beginning. Pre-registration for the event is encouraged, and volunteer attorneys, notaries, and assistance with registration are welcomed.
