St. Joe Today Commissions Temporary Mural on Bluff Stairs

ST. JOE TODAY COMMISSIONS A TEMPORARY MURAL FOR THE BLUFF STAIRS
St. Joe Today is happy to announce the installation of another temporary mural on the stairs leading up to Lake Bluff Park and downtown St. Joseph. St. Joe Today was able to bring this project to the community with support from the Schalon Foundation.
St. Joe Today started the mural project in 2018, the week leading up to Chalk the Block, with a permanent mural on the back of the Welcome Center building and continued with two temporary murals on the bluff stairs. The first was installed in the summer of 2019 and the second in the summer of 2021. All three pieces were commissioned and painted by Texas based artist Anat Ronen.
A second permanent mural was created by Minnesota based artist Shawn McCann in the fall of 2019. This mural can be found on the back of the Holt Bosse building, located in the 100 block of State Street.
The third permanent mural was created by Florida based artist Kumpa Tawornprom in the fall of 2021. This mural can be found on the side of the Silver Harbor Brewing Co. building in downtown St. Joseph.
A fourth permanent mural was created by Indiana based artist Jeff Pilkinton in May of last year. This mural can be found in the alley behind Cornerstone Alliance in Benton Harbor.
Paul Knapp, executive director of St. Joe Today, said this time around they partnered with St. Joseph, MI based artist Kim Wood. “This latest install is something a little more geometric and colorful, reminiscent of a sunset on the water! We are grateful to work with the Schalon Foundation to continue the mural project and add another temporary mural to the bluff stairs.”
Wood said the design was inspired by water, which is what draws her to the area. “I feel like we all innately want to be by a body of water and that’s what makes St. Joe and the beach so iconic. I wanted to find a way to pull in how that made me feel, just the beauty of Lake Michigan and the community!”
The newly installed mural provides viewers with an interactive photo op to help capture a perfect St. Joe summer memory. St. Joe Today plans to continue the mural project in the future.
