The Whitcomb to Host Veterans Day Tribute Honoring Local Heroes

The Whitcomb Senior Living Tower will honor our nation’s heroes with a special Veterans Day Tribute on Tuesday, November 11, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the Marquette Room. The event will celebrate the courage, service, and sacrifice of those who have worn the uniform—including eleven of The Whitcomb’s own heroes, residents who proudly served our country.

A highlight of the program will be a special surprise performance honoring our 96-year old resident and fellow Air Force veteran, Louis (Lou) DeShantz, with a musical composition he wrote titled “Dirge for a Soldier.” This powerful and deeply moving piece, inspired by George Henry Boker’s poem of the same name, pays tribute to fallen soldiers and reflects the profound gratitude shared by all who remember their service.  The Whitcomb plans to play Lou’s composition during the tribute as a special moment of reflection and remembrance.

“We are so proud to have Lou among our Whitcomb family,” said Teri Cooper, Director of Marketing at The Whitcomb. “I discovered Lou's beautiful composition on Apple Music, performed a cappella by the Willamette Master Chorus. Lou’s music captures the spirit of honor, remembrance, and unity that defines Veterans Day.

The Veterans Tribute will also feature the playing of TAPS and a special recognition ceremony for Whitcomb’s resident veterans. Families, friends, and community members are invited to join as The Whitcomb comes together to honor, remember, and serve those who have dedicated their lives to protecting our freedoms. Desserts and beverages will be served following the tribute.

Located in the heart of downtown St. Joseph and overlooking the beautiful shores of Lake Michigan, The Whitcomb Senior Living Tower continues its proud tradition of community, camaraderie, and care—celebrating residents who have served our country and those who continue to serve in spirit.
