Officer-Involved Shooting in Niles Charter Twp

On Monday, June 30, 2025, at approximately 6:00 PM a deputy encountered a vehicle on Third Street south of Fort Street in Niles Charter Township. As the deputy approached the vehicle the passenger fled on foot and the driver fled in the vehicle southbound on Third Street. As the deputy was in a foot pursuit with the male subject the male subject produced a firearm and discharged it at the deputy. The deputy then returned fire at the suspect killing him.


The Michigan State Police have been requested and are performing the investigation into this officer involved shooting incident. The names of the deceased male and the Berrien County Sheriff’s Deputy are not being released currently. As a standard protocol the deputy has been placed on administrative leave.


No further information is available at this time.

The Michigan State Police have been able to make notification of the family of the deceased suspect in this incident. This incident remains under investigation by the Michigan State Police 5th District Special Investigation Section.


The deceased suspect has been identified as:
Joshua B. Coffey, white male, 48 years of age, South Bend IN 46601
